Based on surviving pairs that originated from the Clothing Bureau at Richmond, Virginia, these trousers are the quintessential eastern style worn throughout the war by the Army of Northern Virginia. Commonly made from “domestic” drab or vegetable-dyed jean and cassimere they were also provided to soldiers cut from imported English woolens such as blue-gray kersey. Our reproduction trousers will include various “maker's choice” details present among the extant six pairs of original Richmond Depot trousers. These include a closed, open, or tacked buttonhole fly; tacked or stay-stitched pocket openings; and slightly varying widths of the cuff. Finished trousers are offered here with Japan varnished tin, brown bone, or white bone buttons as availability permits. Each pair will also feature pointed pocket openings with buttons and buttonholes. Our custom production run of 2/2 twill blue-gray English kersey.is available for Richmond depot trousers as are a number of other jeans and cassimere we have in stock.
