Beginning in January 1862 the confederacy began receiving shipments of wool army fabric from Europe. As the war progressed southern production became ever-increasingly dependent on these foreign-produced fabrics to supplement, then supersede dwindling domestic woolen yard goods production. By the summer of 1863, the ANV began seeing its first large-scale issuances of clothing made in Richmond but produced using imported English woolens, and by the advent of the Overland campaign in 1864 most of the army was wearing some sort of article of clothing made from imported fabrics. While a sizable variety of different fabrics were imported the most common was "English Army Cloth", a twill-woven kersey made from a three-color wool blend and originally used to produce overcoats for the British army. Our reproduction English army cloth is a 59" wide 18oz 100% wool three-colored blend twill woven kersey. It is finely woven with a soft hand and a medium nap finish. It is ready to cut out of the box for all of your CS uniforms projects.
